Formula E - Fan Boost and Attack Mode

Fan Boost and Attack Mode explained - By Gracey Guy

To start, if you're new to Formula E, welcome to the all-electric single-seater racing cars. In this article, I will be explaining what Fan Boost and Attack Mode are and their differences.

Fan boost is something to get the fans more involved in the race, influencing the outcome of the race and to give their favourite driver an upgrade in power. It is a significant burst of power, which the drivers can use in a five second time frame but only in the second half of the race. Unfortunately not every driver will receive the fan boost even if voted for, only five drivers will be able to deploy the highly-acclaimed fan boost.

Attack mode is a power boost that every driver can use but only on a certain turn or section of the track. The details of attack mode (the number, duration and the minimum amount of times drivers can deploy it) are announced 60 minutes prior to the race by the FIA, teams and drivers have this time to prepare a strategy - steering in more uncertainty and unpredictable action. Temporarily the power will be raised to 225KW, up from the standard race mode of 220KW, usually this action lasts up to 8 minutes of racing, either in short bursts or a single period.

The differences between attack mode and fan boost

Attack mode is given to all drivers to use throughout the race, can be used from the 2nd lap, and fan boost is determined by the fans. There is an activation zone where drivers can gain attack mode and it is situated just off the racing line, photocells recognise the car driving through the activation zone - adding extra power to the car once it has left that zone, it can be deployed to attempt an overtake. An LED light has been added in the halo to show what mode the driver is using, blue for the activation of attack mode and red for the fan boost.
